China has a long history of about 5,000 years and its economic situations, local conditions and cultural customs of each dynasty as well as the various facets of people’s daily life can be well preserved in literature, especially in the novels. In the Qing Dynasty, which was also a mature period of the Chinese fiction, The Story of the Stone was regarded as the best literary classics, and it has generated its own field of scholarship: “Redology”. Throughout 120 chapters in total of The Story of the Stone, we found hundreds of maids and servants, protagonists and the main members of the Jia family. To manage such a society in miniature, some skillful leadership and excellent management are required, hence the focus of my study in this dissertation.
The purpose of this study is to use the technique of text mining to sort out the types of leadership style in The Story of the Stone in order to analyze and compare leadership style theories of the East and the West. As part of the methodology, an interview outline is developed and in-depth interviews with experts are conducted. The research questions are based on the coding results of the grounded theory. Four factors are extracted namely, "trailblazing guide", "kindness and affinity", "authoritarianism and high pressure", and "playing an exemplary role". Fifteen combinations of the five models are to be obtained by using fsQCA.
The results of the research will render some essential insight into leadership styles. According to the different development status of SMEs, company and corporation owners can choose an applicabe leadership style to help boots their corporate performance. We hope that the results of this study can help government departments and corporations by starting with leadership style issue. This study will provide a way for companies to improve their industrial strength and operational eddiciency, while increasing their overall competitiveness.
