    Title: Effects of leisure activity involvement on body mass index (BMI) in -Evidence from elementary school students

    Abstract: The recent policy of our country is headed to the achievement of being holistic health, and it’s the best opportunity to develop the suitable and right leisure activities during the period of the elementary school. Basing on researching the effect of BMI(Body Mass Index) in the elementary school students with the involved degrees of the students who hold leisure activities ; through the research and analysis to generalize the recommendations for students, parents, schools and related organizations that push this project, to promote students’ desires in participating leisure activities for, keeping the regular BMI (Body Mass Index), that let the backbones of our country in the future to be more completely healthy in body and mind.The study takes the students of the first to sixth grade in the T elementary school as the objects of the investigation. The statistic measures include, descriptive statistics, reliability, validity, one-way ANOVA(, interviewed and concluded. Through the ways of case study and combination of the reference documents, questionnaires, and interviews for proceeding the research investigation. The total number of questionnaires was 387 to be sent out, and the total number of valid return was 384, with the valid usable return rate of 99.22%.The study conclusions are as follows: the percentage of Boys at age of 6-12 with abnormal BMI is 40% and Girls at the same age with abnormal BMI is 37%. The ratio of Girls with low weight is higher than Boys around 10%; the ratio of Boys with over weight is higher than Girls 8%. Most of the leisure activities of students are classified low-involved; among the sedentary activities, the frequency of surfing the internet and playing computer video games is average-involved, the frequency of watching TV is high-involved. Riding bicycle is the main idea for students choosing in kinetic leisure activities, the type of kinetic leisure activities for boys, in accordance with the order are playing basketball, playing other balls game, running that belong to average-involved; and for girls are running, fast walking, pulling the horizontal bar, climbing the pole, swing that belong to average-involved. Drawing is an obvious difference among the leisure activities in different BMI of boys, and in girls, there are such as badminton, jogging, marathon, skating, gymnastic exercise, chatting or playing with parents, joining the traditional music group, hiding and seeking, raising a pet, and so on.
