    Title: Job Competency of the Clinical Nurses- A Case Study of a Taichung Regional Hospital in Taiwan

    Abstract: Recently, the facts of accessible medical care, rapidly medical technology advances, more aging population and prevalence of chronic diseases have prompted medical industry to offer more comprehensive services. Therefore clinical nurses make more effort to accomplish complicated work and often work overload. Nowadays the shortage of clinical nurses is a common problem in each hospital of Taiwan. In order to help manage this problem, we generated a qualitative study to explore the Clinical Nurses’ Job Competency. We invited ten clinical nurses as our sample who have the best performance rated as the top 10% in a regional teaching hospital in the central Taiwan. After analyzing narratives gathered from in-depth interview, we found 22 dimensions as nursing professional competency and totally generated 177 items for measuring those competencies. Then we asked 9 experts to match each item to its competency. According to the agreement consist of at least 5/9 experts, 20 nursing competency and 108 items remained. These nursing competency included sense of responsibility, attention to details, EQ, supports to colleagues, quick response, enthusiasm at work, empathy, professional learning, patience when serving other, innovative thinking, analytical and decision-making skills, time management, hard-working attitude, customer service, sincerely caring, team supports, tolerance to stress, leadership, effective communication, and belief in helping others. Finally, we suggested that medical industry should improve or refine their personnel recruitment, performance management, training and developing and other human resource functions according to our results of job competency.
